Taxonomic significance of achene morphology in the genus Centaurea L. (Asteraceae)

Achene morphology of 49 taxa of the genus Centaurea L. was studied in terms of 19 different characteristics. On the basis of the variation in these features, some sections, such as sect. Cyanus with hairy hilum, were separated. Despite various differences, C. leuzeoides and C. gilanica were categorized in the section Psephelloideae, a section with lots of character variations within its species...

Rapid Chromosome Evolution in Recently Formed Polyploids in Tragopogon (Asteraceae)

BACKGROUND Polyploidy, frequently termed "whole genome duplication", is a major force in the evolution of many eukaryotes. Indeed, most angiosperm species have undergone at least one round of polyploidy in their evolutionary history. Despite enormous progress in our understanding of many aspects of polyploidy, we essentially have no information about the role of chromosome divergence in the est...

Morphological, anatomical and palynological studies of the genus Zoegea L. (Asteraceae) in Iran

The genus Zoegea L. belongs to Asteraceae family and has about 10 species in the world. This genus is considered to be an Irano-Turanian and Mediterranean element and is distributed in south-western and central Asia and in the central, southern, north-western and south-western parts of Iran as well. The subspecies classification of the genus is not consensus and various classifications could be...

Evolution and expression of homeologous loci in Tragopogon miscellus (Asteraceae), a recent and reciprocally formed allopolyploid.

On both recent and ancient time scales, polyploidy (genome doubling) has been a significant evolutionary force in plants. Here, we examined multiple individuals from reciprocally formed populations of Tragopogon miscellus, an allotetraploid that formed repeatedly within the last 80 years from the diploids T. dubius and T. pratensis. Using cDNA-AFLPs followed by genomic and cDNA cleaved amplifie...

Localization of chromenes and benzofurans in the genus Encelia (Asteraceae).

Phytochemical and microscopial analysis of leaves and stems of various species of Encelia showed a strict correlation between the presence of resin ducts and the accumulation of benzopyrans and benzofurans. Fluorescence microscopy of Encelia farinosa proved unambigously that these compounds are stored exclusively in the resin ducts and the surrounding cells.
